Hobbiton — the actual movie set from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit — sits on a working sheep farm outside Matamata, about two hours south of Auckland. You can only see it on a guided tour, and the trickiest part of the trip is the drive: rural, no direct public transport, and every big coach dumps 40 strangers into your photos.
I drive you privately in a Mercedes-Benz GLS. Pickup from wherever you're staying in Auckland, straight down State Highway 1 and 27, past dairy country, and I drop you at the Shire's Rest visitor centre in time for your booked tour slot. While you're inside the set (about 2.5 hours), I wait — no meter running. On the way back we can stop for photos, a Matamata café lunch, or the Firth Tower if you're into local history.

No. The NZ$1,200 covers the car and me for up to 10 hours. The Hobbiton guided tour ticket is separate — around NZ$120 per adult, less for kids, booked directly with Hobbiton. I can book the tickets on your behalf and put them on the same invoice if that's easier.
I've done pickups as early as 05:30 (to catch the first Hobbiton tour) and returns as late as 21:00 (evening 'Banquet Tour'). Anything inside a 10-hour window is included; if the day runs over, it's NZ$100 per extra hour.
Technically yes — Rotorua is another 45 minutes past Matamata — but it makes for a very long, rushed day, especially with kids. I usually recommend a 2-day plan (Hobbiton one day, Rotorua overnight the next). If you want it in one day I'll say so honestly rather than sell you a bad plan.
